Xeriscape

At Green Planet we adopt the basic principles of Xeriscape in the majority of our projects. Due to Australias harsh climate, our water restrictions and increasing environmental awareness Xeriscape – type landscaping offers a perfect solution.

Xeriscape is an American term derived from the Greek word "xeros" meaning dry and "scape" from the word "landscape". It's a method of landscaping, that can be applied to any garden or landscaping style.

Xeriscape-type landscaping is a package of seven steps for making a landscape more water-efficient:

  1. Planning and Design
  2. Soil Analysis
  3. Appropriate Plant Selection
  4. Practical Turf Areas
  5. Efficient Irrigation
  6. Use of Mulches
  7. Appropriate Maintenance

Each of these steps is a good gardening practice. However, the more of them you implement, the more water efficient your landscape becomes.

The majority of our clients request first and foremost that their landscape be low-maintenance and drought tolerant, saving you time, effort and money.

A Xeriscape-type landscape can reduce outdoor water consumption by as much as 50 percent without sacrificing the quality and beauty of your home environment. It is also an environmentally sound landscape, requiring less fertilizer and fewer chemicals.

A xeriscape is a landscape which uses plants that have low water requirements, making them able to withstand extended periods of drought. However keep in mind that this does not necessarily mean that your garden must consist exclusively of Australian native plants. Our experienced horticultural experts can custom make and design various themed landscapes consisting of plants that will not only survive but thrive. Xeric landscapes are a conscious attempt to develop plantings which are compatible with the environment.
